Thirteen Moons: A Novel

Well, the apartment is finally settled. Went to IKEA and figured out how to put everything together, so now it actually feels homey and looks pretty decent, I'd say. I'm feeling more comfortable at work. And my bank account is getting there.... I shopped online for the first time yesterday. I splurged on myself and bought a brand new pair of Chacos that I fell in love with in Colorado this summer and haven't been able to find in my size or color ANYWHERE! They should be here in the mail tomorrow- I'm pretty excited. Because I'm a grandma.

The real world doesn't suck nearly as much as people make it out to. It's nice to have some free time and your weekends belong to you. The whole salary thing doesn't hurt too much either. :) The freelance project I picked up over the summer is starting to kick back into full gear- I've got some ideas rolling around so that's pretty exciting. I started an office kickball team at work and we play HOK tomorrow night. Kickball + work friends + a cooler = an hour of hilarious game time. It's been a blast! Made enchiladas tonight- so good! My cable and internet are finally up and running. I joined a gym and have been going every night with Matt after work. I feel like I'm getting in better shape and I definitely feel healthier. I'm off now to enjoy a good book and a long, hot shower.

The job is great! I decided yesterday that I officially love my office, the people and the kind of work I do. It's like going on a great first date- you're a little nervous the first few days, and then the comfort level is so great you forget everything else in the back of your mind.Right now I'm designing 17 60 sq.ft. murals to go inside a Farmer's Insurance building right now. It's really interesting to me to see how a two-dimensional idea or concept can become a three-dimensional dynamic within space.

My teacher recently recommended me for a T.A. position for a sophomore graphics level class at KCAI- more details to come later. It's something that could be interesting nonetheless, especially to help me decide if teaching at the collegiate level is something I want to pursue once I get my Masters.

I moved into my new apartment on Monday- pictures to come. So far, so good. I love it. 20' ceilings and I think it will be really really cute and cozy once I get all of my furnishings in. I still need a few things and want to plan a trip to Minneapolis to the Ikea store soon.

Let's see, quick update:

Life is going well for me lately. Love the new job. Have a huge workspace and the office is really really nice. We have Beer:30 happy hours at 4:30 on Fridays, I'm helping to plan the office retreat in January (everybody gets their own cabins for the weekend, courtesy of the company..), we have dogs running around the office almost daily, and everybody is really really nice. I've only been working for a month and have already met with clients three times, taken photographs for a project I'm working on, am branding a building with signage, and have gotten to be in charge of a huge potential client and some print design for him.

I move into my new apartment on August 14. I'm so excited! I have 20' ceilings, am two blocks from the office (no more driving...), about a block and a half from Matt and Spencer, and am right in the heart of downtown, except there are trees where I'm at, which adds to the Cosby factor of it all and makes me think I'm in New York or someplace. I'll be right by the Folgers plant, which means it smells like coffee daily (but I kind of like that!)

I've already been to the new library right down the street and have been getting my hands on some new books, which I love. A small glass of wine and a good book at night is the perfect way to unwind, I've found. Right now I'm reading a book about serial killer profiling written by the ex-head profiler for the FBI at Quantico. It's fascinating.

Went to church tonight with Alex at Jacob's Well in Westport. Not sure how I feel about it yet, but it was nice to be around a young crowd. Meanwhile, I've been trying to go running whenever I get a few extra minutes (something about sitting in an office all day and then coming home and sweating like crazy is amazing...) I want to find a yoga studio or an aerobics class (maybe at the YMCA, it's right down the street from my new place..) to keep up with. I get my first paycheck on Tuesday, so hopefully I can start buying some new furniture and enrolling in things like that soon. Not much else to say... hope everyone is well.

First two days at work accomplished. Holiday time tomorrow, and they closed early today for the 4th. So far so good, except that I set off the security alarm last night on my first day. Hot. If you want to know more, ask.

This is the funniest timewaster while you're at work e-card site I've seen:

PEACE.

Finally, I'm home for the summer. I start work in about a week full-time and I'm enjoying the last few days of freedom, suntans, and catching up with old friends: Pugh, I hope your wedding day was fun. The pictures look like everyone there had a good time. Jamie, I hope Texas is treating you well. We need a couple hours of good conversation. Alex, good luck with your first days of summer classes towards your masters. I'm happy you finally found someone who deserves you. Stephen, you leave for the Army tomorrow and I wish you the best. I love you! Ebiere, I'll be thinking about you as you make your way to New York- you'll be great and make more money than all of us combined. Lindsay, congrats on the job at Hallmark- we'll definitely have to keep in touch. Sarah, you leave for Costa Rica soon... I know you can't wait.

That's it from me. Trying my best to pack up the apartment little by little and get organized for next week. Not much else to say except that life is amazing in the way that it takes baby steps for years and years until you finally find yourself at a place where you are completely happy. Good things really do happen to good people, don't they?
